The church has been a go-to wedding venue for centuries but it’s now getting a makeover – thanks to the world’s first inflatable church.inflatable church Complete with a steeple, pews and faux-stained glass windows the church can be built in just two hours and taken down in less than one. It’s designed to allow couples to tie the knot – or renew their vows – wherever they choose and is being marketed as a back-up for outdoor weddings that may be threatened by wind, rain or other elements.

The movable structure, billed as the world’s first inflatable church, is 47 feet high from floor to steeple and comes complete with blow-up organ, altar, pews, candles and “stained glass” windows. Designed by Michael Gill of Southampton, the church cost a cool £15,000 to make and is being offered for weddings and christenings. Gill says it has drawn interest from 20 countries and inquiries from people wanting to buy or rent it.

A spokesman for the Church of England said there were no plans to hold masses at the church but that it would be suitable for weddings and other events. “We are looking at other uses for it, including attracting young people to church in a way that isn’t as intimidating as a traditional church,” he said.

The Church of England’s deputy treasurer has slammed the church’s ‘inappropriate and disrespectful’ design but it has insisted that it is a religious building and not a bouncy castle. “We’re not looking for a church-style design, we want to be a place where people can come together and celebrate their love,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Italy, sun worshippers who don’t want to change out of their bikinis can now attend services on the beach in an inflatable church. The brainchild of a Catholic youth organisation, the church is on its second visit to Campomarino on the island of Sardinia. It’s hoped that the church will attract more young people to church services in the summer when they may be distracted by the fun of holidays.
